Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya Sagar, previously the University of Saugor, was founded on 18th July 1946 by Dr. Sir Hari Singh Gour (Nov. 26, 1870 – Dec. 25, 1949) through his life savings. This 18th University of India and the oldest and the largest University of Madhya Pradesh has the unique distinction of having been established by the largesse of hard earned money of a single individual amounting to two crore of rupees. Besides being an illustrious jurist and legal luminary par excellence, he was a great Patriot, Philanthropist, Educationist and Social Reformer. The University was renamed as Doctor Hari Singh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in February 1983 by the State Legislature. The University is located 5 Km east of Sagar city and its campus spans an area of 1312.89 acres on Pathariya hills attached to the Vindhya Range, enclosed by rich green forest (approx. 100 acres) inside its campus and has successfully helped in the maintenance and preservation of ecosystem and its diversity. It ranks among the most beautiful campuses in India.
