As the first women's college in Asia and India, Bethune College produced the first two female graduates in the history of the British colonial Empire. Since its founding, Bethune College has played a crucial part in the education and emancipation of women, thereby enriching their lives. On June 16, 1879, Bethune College set out on its adventure. On June 16, 1879, the Calcutta Gazette announced that Baboo Sosi Bhusan Dutt, a lecturer at Ravenshaw College in Cuttack, had been appointed as the first lecturer in the Bethune School's college department. With the assistance of Raja Dakshinaranjan Mukhopadhyay, Ramgopal Ghosh, and Pandit Madan Mohan Tarkalankar, John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune (1801–1851) founded Calcutta Female School in 1849, the first school for ladies in Calcutta, with 21 girls enrolled. This is where the College had its start. Arriving in India in 1848, J.E.D. Bethune served as a member of the Governor General's Council for Law before rising to the position of President of the Council of Education. There was a strong need for a separate library facility due to the rise in honors courses, students, library funds, and books at the same time. The library was split into two sections in 1983: one for science and one for the arts.
