Mithibai College of Arts and Chauhan Institute of Science was established in 1961 by Shri Vile Parle Kelvani Mandal to provide the growing need for institutions of higher education in the western suburbs of Mumbai. The college is a recipient of grants under Rashtriya Uchchatar Abhiyan (RUSA-2), DBT and DST.
The college has gained accolades as being top ranker in Arts and Science faculty and second ranker in commerce faculty in Mumbai by India Today in 2022. The college wes also awarded All India Fourth Rank amongst autonomous colleges by EduWrold 2022.
The college has 22 departments associated with the facilities of Arts, Science & Commerce. There are 16 post graduate programs and 10 research Centres offering Ph.D. programmes.
In order to improve the quality of higher education, the Government of India, through the UGC has recommended the delinking of academically well-established colleges from the system of affiliation to a university, to promote academic excellence. It is Accreditation by NAAC with A with CGPA 3.75 in the scale of 4.
