Hotspots are species rich most threatened reservoirs of plants and animals on Earth. Explanation: Hotspots were first identified by Norman Myers in 1988 as priority areas for in situ conservation. These regions have a high number of endemic species and face significant threats. Currently, 34 hotspots have been identified worldwide, covering less than 2% of the Earth’s land area but harbouring a very high number of species. Examples of hotspots in India include the Western Ghats and Eastern Himalayas, which are rich in reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and some mammals.
