In formulating the theory of evolution by natural selection, Charles Darwin was greatly influenced by Malthus’s idea on population control. Explanation: In formulating his theory of evolution by natural selection, Charles Darwin was greatly influenced by Thomas Malthus’s idea on population control, as outlined in Malthus’s “Essay on the Principle of Population” (1798). Malthus argued that populations tend to grow faster than the resources available, leading to a “struggle for existence.” Darwin applied this concept to natural populations, reasoning that this struggle would lead to the survival of only those individuals best adapted to their environment.
