NATO was primarily formed to defend democratic nations from the threat of communism. Explanation: NATO was created in 1949 by Western democratic nations, led by the United States, as a collective military alliance during the Cold War. Its main goal was to stop the spread of Soviet influence and protect democratic, capitalist countries from the threat of communism. Under this alliance, member nations agreed that a military attack on one would be treated as an attack on all, successfully discouraging Soviet aggression in Europe.
