Assassination of the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary Explanation: On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of a Serbian nationalist group. This event triggered a series of diplomatic conflicts between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, leading to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia. This set off a chain reaction among alliances, ultimately resulting in the outbreak of World War I as major powers like Germany, Russia, Britain, and France became involved in the conflict.
