Aerosols Explanation: Certain gaseous compounds, such as CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), released from refrigerators, aerosol sprayers, and the packing material styrofoam, rise into the atmosphere. There, they break down into chlorine atoms, which in turn break down ozone (O3) into oxygen (O2) and O. The reduced ozone cannot prevent the entry of harmful UV- rays to the earth, which cause sunburn, genetic disorders, skin cancer, and reduced productivity in forests and the sea.
