Why Farmers Still Burn Crop Residue?
Even though better options exist, many farmers continue to burn crop residue. The main reason is cost. Machines needed for safe disposal are expensive and used only for a short time each year. Farmers also face other challenges.
Many are not trained to use these machines. They are unsure if new methods will give the same crop yield. Since farming is their main source of income, they avoid taking risks. There are also concerns about machine breakdowns and extra effort.

A Ground-Level Solution That Works
Professor Subhankar Saha from Ahmedabad University worked on a solution that focused on real needs. His approach involved many stakeholders and worked directly with farmers. Trained village volunteers helped farmers in the field. They solved problems and guided them step by step. Experienced farmers shared their knowledge through simple videos, which helped build trust.
The project also involved schools. Children were encouraged to spread awareness at home. At the community level, “tool banks” were created. Farmers could rent machines instead of buying them, making it more affordable. The results were promising. Satellite data showed fewer fire incidents in areas where this system was used. Farmers who adopted these methods also reported better crop yields.
This study shows that sustainable farming can help reduce air pollution. But more importantly, it proves that real change happens when solutions are simple, affordable, and built around people’s needs.
