Your ICSE percentage is the average of your best five subjects, and English must be one of them. Add English to your four highest-scoring other subjects, divide by 500 and multiply by 100. A student with 463 marks in those five subjects has 92.6%.
CISCE itself does not print a percentage on the ICSE marksheet. It reports marks and grades for each subject, and the best-of-five figure is what schools, colleges and admission forms work out from them. In 2026, 2,58,721 candidates sat ICSE and 99.18% passed; the 2027 results are expected around the end of April 2027, the date of the last two results.

ICSE Percentage Overview
ICSE Best of 5 Rule: Which Subjects Count
ICSE candidates take at least six subjects. Five count towards the percentage: English, plus the four highest scores among the rest. Every subject is marked out of 100, but the split between the board exam and internal assessment depends on its group.
Group III subjects give half their marks to internal assessment, which is why Computer Applications often ends up among a student's best four. If your marksheet shows a subject's papers separately, such as English Language and English Literature, use their average so the subject counts once.
How to Calculate ICSE Percentage: Step by Step
Percentage = (English + best four other subjects) ÷ 500 × 100
Worked Example: Six Subjects

Source: ICSE best-of-five rule applied to a six-subject marksheet
Total = 90 + 98 + 95 + 92 + 88 = 463, so the percentage is 463 ÷ 500 × 100 = 92.6%. Counting all six subjects would give 548 ÷ 600 = 91.3%, so the best-of-five rule adds 1.3 points here.
Worked Example: When English Is Your Lowest Mark
The English rule matters most when English is your weakest subject.
Total = 72 + 95 + 90 + 88 + 85 = 430, or 86.0%. If English could be dropped, the best five would total 438 (87.6%), so the compulsory English rule costs this student 1.6 points.
ICSE Percentage Calculator and Marks-to-Percentage Table
The calculator on this page applies the best-of-five rule for you: enter each subject's total, and it marks every subject as Compulsory, Counted or Dropped and shows the percentage. It also flags any subject below the 33% pass mark and has an ISC (Class 12) mode.
The interactive ICSE and ISC percentage calculator is available on the web version of this article.
To check by hand, remember that the five subjects add up to 500, so every 5 marks equal 1 percentage point.
To find the marks needed for a target, multiply the percentage by 5: 90% needs 450, and 95% needs 475.
ICSE Passing Marks and Pass Certificate Rules
The pass mark is 33% in each subject, shown as grade 7 or better. Under CISCE's ICSE regulations, a candidate must enter at least six subjects and reach the pass standard in at least five, including English, to receive the Pass Certificate cum Statement of Marks. Results now read "Qualified" or "Not Qualified", replacing the earlier "Pass Certificate Awarded" wording.

ISC Percentage Calculation: Best of Four for Class 12
ISC results follow the same idea with one subject fewer. Most colleges calculate an ISC percentage as English plus the best three electives, divided by 400, though some admission forms ask for all subjects, so check the form you are filling in.
For example, English 80 with electives of 90, 85, 70 and 60 gives (80 + 90 + 85 + 70) ÷ 400 = 81.25%.
ISC 2026 candidates came from 1,553 schools. Certificate and marksheet details are in our ICSE and ISC Result 2026 report.
