CAT Work Experience Criteria 2025

Work experience can play a vital role in your CAT application, especially for certain IIMs that assign weightage to professional experience. While it is not mandatory to have work experience to appear for CAT or to get admission into many IIMs, having relevant experience can improve your chances during shortlisting and final selection. Here’s what candidates need to know:

  1. Full-Time Experience Only Only post-graduation full-time work experience is considered. Pre-graduation internships, part-time jobs, or project work do not count.
  2. End Date for Calculation Work experience is counted up to 31 July 2025.
  3. Chronological Order When filling the CAT form, enter all jobs in reverse chronological order: latest first, earliest last.
  4. Weightage Across IIMs
    • Top IIMs (BLACKI): 0–10% weightage
    • Baby/ New IIMs: 10–20% weightage
    • Work experience can influence shortlisting, especially for prominent IIMs like Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Bangalore, and Indore.
  5. No Mandatory Requirement Freshers can apply; however, candidates with experience may get an edge in the selection process.Check: CAT Eligibility Criteria 2025

How to Calculate CAT Work Experience

The CAT form automatically calculates your work experience once you enter your details. The calculation follows this formula:

CAT 2025 Work Experience = Total days worked till 31 July 2025 − Days of breaks between jobs

Steps to calculate:

  1. Enter your joining date and, if applicable, last working day for each job.
  2. Enter any gaps between jobs in days.
  3. The system sums up all days and converts them into months.
  4. This total is used to calculate IIM-specific work experience points.

CAT Normalization Formula

Since the CAT (Common Admission Test) is conducted in multiple slots, scores are normalized to ensure fairness across different sessions (as difficulty levels may vary slightly).

The process involves two steps:

  1. Normalisation across sessions (slot-wise)

  2. Scaling to the overall CAT score

Step 1: Normalization Within a Section

For each section (VARC, DILR, QA), normalization is done using the following formula:

Normalized Score=((XMi)Si)×Sp+Mp\text{Normalized Score} = \left( \frac{(X - M_i)}{S_i} \right) \times S_p + M_p

Where:

SymbolMeaning
XRaw score obtained by the candidate in that section
MᵢMean score of that section for the candidate’s slot
SᵢStandard deviation of that section for the candidate’s slot
MₚMean score of that section for all candidates across all slots
SₚStandard deviation of that section for all candidates across all slots

Step 2: Overall Normalization

After section-wise normalization, the overall normalized score is computed using a similar method:

Overall Normalized Score=((XtMit)Sit)×Spt+Mpt\text{Overall Normalized Score} = \left( \frac{(X_t - M_{it})}{S_{it}} \right) \times S_{pt} + M_{pt}

Where:

SymbolMeaning
XₜTotal raw score of the candidate across all sections
MᵢₜMean total score of candidates in the same slot
SᵢₜStandard deviation of total scores in that slot
MₚₜMean total score across all slots
SₚₜStandard deviation of total scores across all slots

Step 3: Conversion to Scaled Percentile

Once normalized, CAT authorities convert the normalized scores to percentiles using the candidate’s relative position among all test-takers:

Percentile (P)=NRN×100\text{Percentile (P)} = \frac{N - R}{N} \times 100

Where:

SymbolMeaning
NTotal number of candidates who appeared in the test
RRank of the candidate (based on normalized score)

For Example (Simplified)

Suppose:

  • Candidate’s raw QA score = 45

  • Mean of QA section in that slot = 40

  • SD in that slot = 10

  • Overall mean QA across slots = 38

  • Overall SD across slots = 12

Then:

Normalized QA Score=(4540)10×12+38=44\text{Normalized QA Score} = \frac{(45 - 40)}{10} \times 12 + 38 = 44

IIM Work Experience Points 2025

Work experience plays a role in the final selection process of many IIMs, as it helps showcase a candidate’s practical exposure, leadership skills, and decision-making abilities. While CAT scores are the primary criterion for shortlisting, certain IIMs award additional points for professional experience during the final admission process.

Is Work Experience Necessary for CAT?

No, work experience is not mandatory to appear for CAT 2025. Fresh graduates can easily apply, and many IIM aspirants write the exam right after completing their undergraduate studies. CAT primarily evaluates analytical, quantitative, verbal, and logical reasoning skills, not professional experience. However, having work experience can provide certain advantages:

  • Not mandatory for any IIM.
  • Advantageous for prominent IIMs: For instance, in 2025:
    • 73% of IIM Bangalore PGP students had >12 months of experience.
    • IIM Calcutta favored candidates with >12 months of experience.
  • Baby IIMs: 40–70% of admitted students had 0 work experience.

CAT Work Experience: Minimum Ideal Work Experience

While CAT does not require candidates to have prior work experience, having professional exposure can strengthen your profile, especially for top IIMs. Work experience reflects maturity, practical knowledge, and leadership potential.

Note: Ideal work experience for top IIMs: 12–36 months.

Conclusion

While work experience is not mandatory for CAT, having 1 to 3 years of full-time post-graduation professional experience can provide a significant competitive edge during the IIM selection process. This experience helps candidates demonstrate practical exposure, problem-solving abilities, and leadership skills, which are highly valued in the interview and final selection stages. Freshers are still eligible to apply to all IIMs and can compete solely based on their CAT scores, academic performance, and other selection criteria. However, candidates with relevant work experience often have an advantage, particularly in the top-tier IIMs, commonly referred to as the BLACKI IIMs – Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, and Indore. For these institutes, even a few years of professional experience can strengthen your profile, help you provide real-world examples during the WAT/PI rounds, and enhance your overall chances of selection.
