JEE Main 2026 Exam Structure and Weightage

The JEE Main 2026 exam is conducted in two sessions—January and April. Candidates can appear for one or both sessions. The exam is held in online mode for B.E./B.Tech (Paper 1) and in a combination of online and offline modes for B.Arch/B.Planning (Paper 2). Paper 1 consists of 75 questions—25 each from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each question carries 4 marks, with 1 mark deducted for incorrect answers. The total marks are 300.

JEE Main 2026 Chapter-Wise Weightage and Strategy

JEE Main 2026 preparation should focus on high-weightage chapters across Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Prioritise concept-heavy and scoring topics like Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Organic Chemistry, Algebra, and Calculus. Regular problem practice, revision, and mock tests are essential to improve speed, accuracy, and overall exam performance within a limited time.

JEE Main 2026 Physics: High-Weightage Chapters

Physics is known for its conceptual depth and application-based questions. The following chapters consistently carry higher weightage in JEE Main 2026:

  • Mechanics (Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Rotational Motion, Gravitation)
  • Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer
  • Electromagnetism (Electrostatics, Magnetism, EMI)
  • Optics (Ray and Wave Optics)
  • Modern Physics (Atoms, Nuclei, Dual Nature)
  • Oscillations and Waves

Candidates should prioritise these chapters, focusing on understanding concepts and practising numerical problems. Solving previous years’ papers and mock tests is crucial for building speed and accuracy.

JEE Main 2026 Chemistry: High-Weightage Chapters

Chemistry is divided into Physical, Organic, and Inorganic sections. The weightage distribution is roughly:

  • Physical Chemistry (35–40%): Thermodynamics, Chemical Kinetics, Electrochemistry, Solutions, Solid State
  • Organic Chemistry (35%): General Organic Chemistry (GOC), Hydrocarbons, Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic Acids, Biomolecules, Polymers
  • Inorganic Chemistry (25–30%): S-Block Elements, Coordination Compounds, p-Block Elements, d- and f-Block Elements

Focus on memorising reactions, practising numericals in Physical Chemistry, and revising Inorganic Chemistry frequently. Organic Chemistry requires understanding mechanisms and practising named reactions.

JEE Main 2026 Mathematics: High-Weightage Chapters

Mathematics is the most scoring section if candidates master key chapters:

  • Algebra (Quadratic Equations, Complex Numbers, Matrices and Determinants, Permutations and Combinations)
  • Calculus (Limits, Continuity, Differentiability, Applications of Derivatives, Integration)
  • Coordinate Geometry (Straight Lines, Circles, Conic Sections)
  • Probability and Statistics
  • Vectors and 3D Geometry

Practice formula-based questions and solve a variety of problems from these chapters. Maintaining a formula sheet and solving daily practice sets will help in revision and improving speed.

JEE Main 2026 Subject-Wise Preparation Tips

JEE Main 2026 subject-wise preparation needs balanced practice and revision. Focus on strong concepts in Physics, regular revision in Chemistry, and daily problem-solving in Mathematics. Using NCERT, reference books, mock tests, and quick revision tools will help improve accuracy, speed, and overall performance.

Physics

  • Build a strong conceptual foundation before moving to advanced problems.
  • Use NCERT textbooks and reference books like HC Verma for conceptual clarity.
  • Practice at least 20–30 problems daily, focusing on high-weightage chapters.
  • Use animations and simulations for topics like Optics and Modern Physics.

Chemistry

  • Revise Inorganic Chemistry regularly to retain facts.
  • Focus on reaction mechanisms and named reactions in Organic Chemistry.
  • Practice numerical problems and revise important formulas for Physical Chemistry.
  • Use flashcards and summary sheets for quick revision.

Mathematics

  • Practice daily, focusing on Calculus, Algebra, and Coordinate Geometry.
  • Maintain a formula notebook for last-minute revision.
  • Solve previous years’ papers and mock tests to improve speed and accuracy.
  • Learn multiple solving techniques for each type of problem.
