JEE Main 2026 Exam Pattern and Structure

The JEE Main 2026 exam for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) will be conducted online, with a duration of three hours. The paper consists of 75 questions for a total of 300 marks, distributed equally among Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each subject includes 20 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and 5 numerical value questions (NVQs). There is negative marking for incorrect MCQs, but no negative marking for NVQs.

JEE Main 2026 Subject-wise Preparation Strategy

A well-planned subject-wise strategy is essential for scoring high in JEE Main 2026. Below are detailed approaches for each subject.

JEE Main 2026 Physics: Conceptual Clarity and Application

Physics in JEE Main 2026 emphasises conceptual understanding and application. The syllabus covers topics such as Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Thermodynamics, Optics, and Modern Physics. Key chapters include Rotational Motion, Electrostatics, Magnetism, and Wave Optics.

  • Focus on mastering basic concepts and their applications through derivations and graphical methods.
  • Practice numerical problems from previous years and mock tests to improve speed and accuracy.
  • Important topics: Mechanics (Rotational Motion, Kinematics), Electromagnetism (Electrostatics, Magnetism), Thermodynamics, Optics, Modern Physics.
  • Use NCERT textbooks as the foundation and supplement with advanced problem-solving books.
  • Revise formulas and derivations regularly for quick recall during the exam.

JEE Main 2026 Chemistry: Balancing Theory and Practice

Chemistry is divided into Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry. Organic Chemistry is considered the most scoring, while Inorganic Chemistry requires memorisation of reactions and facts.

  • Physical Chemistry: Focus on Thermodynamics, Chemical Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, and Solutions. Practice numerical problems and understand underlying concepts.
  • Organic Chemistry: Master Basics of Organic Chemistry, Reaction Mechanisms, Named Reactions, and Biomolecules. Solve previous year questions and practice named reactions.
  • Inorganic Chemistry: Memorise Periodic Table trends, Coordination Compounds, and Qualitative Analysis. Practice writing reactions and understanding exceptions.
  • Use NCERT textbooks for theory and supplement with reference books for advanced practice.
  • Create concise notes for quick revision, especially for reactions and important facts.

JEE Main 2026 Mathematics: Speed, Accuracy, and Formula Mastery

Mathematics in JEE Main 2026 is the most time-consuming section. The syllabus includes Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors, and Probability.

  • Focus on high-weightage chapters such as Calculus (Limits, Continuity, Differentiability, Integral Calculus), Algebra (Matrices, Determinants, Permutations, Combinations), Coordinate Geometry, and Vectors.
  • Practice formula-based problems and typical JEE-style questions to build speed and accuracy.
  • Important topics: Matrices and Determinants, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors, Probability, Sequences and Series.
  • Solve topic-wise previous year questions and mock tests to improve time management.
  • Revise standard formulas and practice step-by-step solutions for complex problems.
