The Centre for Development Studies (CDS), located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a premier autonomous social science research institute established in 1970. Affiliated with Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), CDS offers advanced programs in economics and development studies, including a two-year MA in Applied Economics and a four-year PhD in Economics. The campus spans 10 acres and features sustainable architecture by Laurie Baker. With a faculty strength of about 20 and a student body typically ranging from 100–150, CDS is recognized for its research excellence and the extensive K. N. Raj Library, housing over 170,000 titles. Centre for Development Studies - [CDS] Admission Deadlines

CDS admissions for the 2025–26 cycle typically open in April and close by June for both MA and PhD programs. The application window for the MA Applied Economics program is usually April–June, with entrance exams conducted in June and results declared by July. PhD applications follow a similar schedule, with interviews held in June–July. Late applications are generally not accepted, and shortlisted candidates must complete document verification by August.

 

Centre for Development Studies - [CDS] UG Admission

CDS in Thiruvananthapuram does not offer undergraduate (UG) degree programs such as BA or BSc. The institute focuses on postgraduate and doctoral studies in economics and development studies. CDS offers a rigorous PhD in Economics program, affiliated to JNU and recognized by the University of Kerala. For 2025 admissions, candidates must hold a master’s degree in economics or related fields with at least 55% marks. Selection involves a written test and interview, with typical cutoffs in the 70–80 percentile range. Annual intake is usually 10–15 seats. The program duration is 4 years, and total fees are approximately INR 40,000–50,000. Application fees are INR 800–1,000.
