India institute under the Indian Space Research Organisation wass set up in 1966 and is one of the main places in India for learning remote sensing, GIS (Geographic Information System) and space-based Earth study. IIRS Dehradun teaches people how satellite pictures and space data are used to study land, water, forests, weather and disasters.
It also gives special courses to officers from Central and State Government departments so they can use Earth Observation (EO) data in their work. Since 2001, IIRS has been part of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme of the Ministry of External Affairs. Under this programme, it gives short courses to students from other countries too. Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, along with Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, also runs an M.Tech. course in Remote Sensing & GIS, which is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
To reach more students outside the campus, IIRS started a live Distance Learning Programme (DLP) in 2007 and an e-learning course in August 2014. Today, around 1,000 institutions and organisations across India are connected with IIRS through its Outreach Programme, and more than 1,00,000 participants have taken part in these courses so far.
