JNCASR is an autonomous institution established in 1989 by the Department of Science and Technology, GoI, as a part of the celebrations of the birth centenary year of Jawaharlal Nehru. Prof. CNR Rao, FRS, was the first President. The Centre was granted the status of an Institution Deemed to be a University by the University Grants Commission, GoI, in 2002. Prof. Giridhar U. Kulkarni is the President of the Centre, and Prof. V Ramgopal Rao is the Chairman of its Governing Council. The Council of Management is responsible for all significant activities of the Centre, such as the award of degrees, appointment of new faculty and introduction of new programmes. The Centre's Academic Advisory Committee (AAC) monitors the teaching programs and degree awards. The institution is led by the President, supported by the Administrative Officer and other Officers in charge of their departments.
Research at the Centre is conducted in Units (small departments) split along the lines of major research interest. These Units include Chemistry and Physics of Materials, Engineering Mechanics, Evolutionary and Integrative Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Theoretical Sciences, New Chemistry, Geodynamics, Neurosciences and Education Technology. As an institution of higher learning, the main objective of JNCASR is to develop well-trained students graduating with Master's degrees and PhD. In the last 32 years, numerous of our alums have developed to assume important roles in academia and industry.
