LLM Environmental Law FAQs

Is LLM Environmental Law a 2 year or 1 year course?

Previously, an LLM Environmental Law was a 2-year postgraduation study in most of the Indian Universities. However, in recent years, many universities, especially National Law Universities (NLUs) and prominent private institutions, have transitioned to offering 1-year LL.M. programs in line with international standards. Some universities like Gujarat University still offer LLM Environment & Legal Order for 2 years duration.

Can LLM graduates start practising immediately after completion of the course?

No, graduates can not start practising law immediately after completing study. They have to fulfil some prerequisites set by the Bar Council of India (BCI). Graduates need to enrol with a state bar council in the jurisdiction where you intend to practice. Enrollment in council is followed by passing AIBE (All India Bar Exam), conducted by BCI. Upon qualifying AIBE, you will receive a “Certificate of Practice”, which is basically your licence to start practice.

Is LLM Environmental Law valid for jobs in government legal firms?

Yes, an LLM Environmental Law is a valuable asset for government law firms that deal with climate change, energy production, biodiversity conservation, environment policy, and sustainable development. Graduates with LLM in Environmental Law can apply for jobs in such government sectors once they have obtained a law practice licence from BCI.
