A 90 percentile in JEE Main 2026 equals a Common Rank List (CRL) rank of about 1,53,847. NTA's final count was 15,38,468 unique Paper 1 candidates, and 10% of them, about 1,53,847, scored above the 90th percentile. In raw marks, 90 percentile needed between 70 and 103 marks out of 300 across the 18 exam shifts, depending on shift difficulty.

90 percentile clears the 2026 JEE Advanced cut-off for every category except General, which needed 93.4123549. For JoSAA seats, General candidates at this rank face Open-category closing ranks that ended between 52,233 and 81,636 in the 2025 Round 1 examples below, while reserved-category candidates are allotted by category rank. In private admissions, five JIIT Noida programmes closed beyond rank 1,53,847 in 2025.

JEE Main Percentile vs Rank: 90 Percentile Rank Calculation

The JEE Main percentile, or NTA score, is the share of candidates who scored at or below a candidate's normalised score, so rank follows from the total number of candidates: approximate rank = (100 − percentile) ÷ 100 × 15,38,468.

Near 90 percentile, each percentile point equals about 15,385 ranks. A 92 percentile is about 30,770 ranks ahead of 90; an 88 percentile, about 30,769 ranks behind. Ties can shift the exact rank slightly. The ranking process is explained on our JEE Main exam page.

90 Percentile in JEE Mains Means How Many Marks?

NTA publishes percentile scores, not a marks vs percentile table, because normalisation calculates each shift's percentile separately from candidates' raw scores. Shift-wise data compiled from 2026 scorecards shows the marks that corresponded to 90 percentile in each shift.

The same percentile needed 33 more marks in the easiest shift (103) than in the toughest (70). Session 2 was easier overall: its median shift needed 95 marks for 90 percentile, 7 more than Session 1's 88.

90 Marks in JEE Mains Percentile

Because the marks needed for 90 percentile ranged from 70 to 103, a score of 90 marks landed above the 90th percentile in tougher shifts and below it in easier ones. In the 7 shifts where 90 percentile needed fewer than 90 marks, 90 marks placed a candidate above it; in the 11 shifts that needed 91 or more, it fell short.

Does 90 Percentile Qualify for JEE Advanced? Category-wise Cut-off

In 2026, 90 percentile cleared the JEE Advanced cut-off for four of the five main categories. General candidates fell 3.41 points short.

General Category Cut-off Trend, 2023–2026

90 percentile would not have qualified a General candidate in any of the last four years. The lowest General cut-off in that period, 90.7788642 in 2023, was still 0.78 points above 90. Earlier qualifying cut-offs and college-wise closing ranks are on our JEE Main cut-off 2024 page.

EWS, OBC, SC and ST candidates who qualify can register on our JEE Advanced exam page and compare category closing ranks on our JEE Advanced cut-off 2025 page.

JoSAA Counselling at 90 Percentile: NIT, IIIT and GFTI Closing Ranks

For a General candidate at CRL 1,53,847, JoSAA Open seats at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs are out of reach on 2025 Round 1 data. The highest Open-category closing ranks reported in that round were in the 52,000–82,000 range, and rank 1,53,847 is 1.9 times the highest of them.

Two patterns in this data matter at 90 percentile. Female-only seat pools closed later than gender-neutral ones (63,960 against 56,825 for the same IIIT programme), and NITs fill 50% of their seats from the home-state quota. JoSAA 2025 ran six rounds, and opening and closing ranks move round by round; round-wise data is on our JoSAA counselling cut-off page.

Reserved-category candidates are allotted by category rank, which is far smaller than CRL. With 1,56,038 SC and 52,152 ST candidates among 15,38,468 in 2026, the same 90 percentile can fall within NIT, IIIT or GFTI closing ranks in those categories. Category seat shares are on our JEE Main reservation criteria page. Institute-wise opening and closing ranks appear on college pages such as our IIIT Surat cut-off page, and 2025 General-category closing ranks on our JEE Main general cut-off 2025 page.

Private B.Tech Colleges Accepting JEE Main at 90 Percentile

JIIT Noida admits on JEE Main CRL alone, without category ranks. Five of the seven programmes in its published 2025 closing ranks closed beyond 1,53,847.

Core CSE at the Sector 128 campus closed 1,09,736 ranks beyond 1,53,847; at the Sector 62 campus, it closed 61,640 ranks ahead of it.

Some universities often named for this percentile run their own entrance tests instead: VIT through VITEEE, Manipal Institute of Technology through MET, and BITS Pilani through BITSAT. A JEE Main score alone does not get a seat at these institutes. In Delhi, the Joint Admission Counselling (JAC) admits to DTU, NSUT, IIIT-Delhi and IGDTUW on JEE Main rank; check JAC's published closing ranks for each branch.
