The Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu is situated on the New Campus in Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It caters to a diverse learner population of around 12,000 students (2023–24) with dedicated infrastructure and support services designed for open and distance learning. The Directorate provides a robust library, modern labs, and access to university-wide facilities for comprehensive academic engagement.

Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu Facilities: Central Library

The central library is one of the core academic assets for distance learners, offering expansive resources in both print and digital formats. The DDE’s own section houses more than 36,987 books and maintains periodicals and research material. Facilities include a well-equipped reading room, internet access points, and availability of key reference and competitive examination materials. Students can also utilize the broader University of Jammu’s Central Library, which features extensive online journal access, photocopying, RFID-based service, and three main reading halls for comfortable study environments.

In addition to academic infrastructure, the Directorate ensures convenient amenities for student welfare and smooth academic functioning. These include a cafeteria serving hygienic meals during institute hours, on-campus banking and post office services, and continuous access to high-speed Wi-Fi. The campus environment is designed to be both functional and student-friendly, providing basic healthcare through a health centre and ATM facilities for financial transactions.

Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu Facilities: Sports & Recreation

Distance learners benefit from access to the University of Jammu’s comprehensive sports complex and recreation amenities. The campus hosts facilities for major sports including cricket, football, basketball, tennis, athletics, and indoor activities. These avenues encourage physical well-being and a balanced student life, even for those enrolled through distance mode.

Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu Facilities: Innovation & Research

While not a dedicated research institute, the DDE integrates seminar presentations, viva-voce, and project work into its postgraduate and B.Ed. programmes. Learners are encouraged to participate in research-oriented activities aligned with delivered curricula and attend special academic events organized in collaboration with the university’s other departments.

Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu Hostel Facilities

Hostel accommodation is managed centrally by the University of Jammu, with three boys’ hostels and two girls’ hostels on campus, but hostel seats are reserved exclusively for regular (non-distance) students. Distance learners are not eligible for hostel allotment. The hostels themselves provide modern amenities—such as recreational spaces, inverters for power supply, hygienic mess, and secure entry—for regular students only.

Distance mode students are encouraged to make independent accommodation arrangements off campus if needed.

 

Directorate of Distance Education, University of Jammu Events & Festivals

Even for students enrolled remotely, the Directorate provides avenues for participation in NSS, cultural programmes, and annual academic events as part of the wider university community. While daily engagement may differ from regular campus study, DDE students are invited to annual convocations, job fairs, and extension lectures. Occasional workshops and awareness days—such as career counselling events—ensure that distance learners remain connected with academic, cultural, and social development initiatives of the University of Jammu.
