Admissions at IMA Chennai run on a rolling basis rather than fixed university-style counselling. Seats are confirmed on a first-come, first-serve basis once a candidate completes the reservation process below. For the Diploma Nautical Science (DNS) course, new batches begin twice a year: February/March and August/September. For other courses, contact the admission office directly for the current batch start date.

Eligibility Criteria for IMA Chennai Admission 2026
Eligibility is different for each course. Check the table below before you apply.
Lateral Entry into Marine Engineering (Direct 2nd Year): Open to candidates with a 3-year Diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, or related engineering trades. Age limit: Max 25 years.
How to Apply for IMA Chennai Admission?
- Step1: Download the IMA Admission Application Form from the official website, or collect it directly from the IMA office.
- Step 2: Check that you meet the eligibility criteria for your chosen course (see table above).
- Step 3: Reserve your seat by paying ₹5,000 via Demand Draft in favour of "International Maritime Academy Trust," payable at Chennai. Your reservation receipt is issued immediately.
- Step 4: If you are still awaiting your 10th/12th results, you can still send your filled application form along with the reservation fee and your seat reservation receipt will be issued right away.
- Step 5: Report to the IMA Administrative Office on the informed reporting date with 2 passport-size photographs and original 10th/12th mark sheets and passing certificates.
- Step 6: Complete your medical fitness test under a DGS-approved doctor. Admission is confirmed only if you clear this test.
- Step 7: Pay the balance course fee before the course starts, then report to the IMA hostel with your personal belongings on the reporting date.
