About Kashmir University

The University of Kashmir, originally part of the University of Jammu and Kashmir established in 1948, became a full-fledged university in 1969 after bifurcation. It is located in Hazratbal, Srinagar, between the iconic Dal Lake and Nigeen Lake. Over the years, it has grown into a premier institution of higher education with campuses at Anantnag (South Campus), Baramulla (North Campus), and Kupwara, along with a sub-office in Jammu. Offering a wide range of programmes across Arts, Sciences, Law, Management, Medicine, Engineering, Fine Arts, and more, the University of Kashmir continues to be a hub of academic excellence and research. How to Reach
  • By Air: The nearest airport is Srinagar International Airport (SXR), located about 20 km from the campus. Regular flights connect Srinagar with major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Jammu. From the airport, taxis and cabs are easily available.

  • By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Jammu Tawi Railway Station (approx. 270 km away). From Jammu, one can travel to Srinagar by bus, shared cabs, or taxis. The Banihal Railway Station, around 70 km from Srinagar, also connects the valley to the rest of India via the Banihal–Baramulla rail link.

  • By Road: Srinagar is well connected by the National Highway (NH-44). Regular JKSRTC buses, private buses, and taxis operate from Jammu, Anantnag, Baramulla, and other parts of J&K to Srinagar.

  • Local Transport: Within Srinagar, the university can be reached by auto-rickshaws, local buses, and cabs from Lal Chowk, Dal Gate, or other city centers.

Kashmir University Scholarships

Kashmir University offers various scholarships opportunities for its students across various departments. Here are some of the scholarships available:

 

Merit Scholarships

The University of Kashmir awards two scholarships of INR1,000 per month each (as per UC 10-04-2018) at the postgraduate level every year. One scholarship is awarded purely on the basis of merit, while the other is based on merit-cum-means. These scholarships are available to students of the 1st–2nd Semester and 3rd–4th Semester, or under the Annual pattern, separately as applicable.

 

Research Scholarships

Each Department/Research Centre offers four scholarships for students undertaking research leading to a Ph.D. or M.Phil. degree. In addition, a contingency grant is provided annually to cover miscellaneous research-related expenses.

 

Student Aid

The University has established a Student Aid Fund to provide financial assistance to students, particularly those from low-income families who demonstrate merit. The Kashmir University Alumni Association also contributes financial support, with preference given to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, especially orphans.
