What is MA Mathematics?

MA Mathematics is a graduate level degree focused on creating a deep theoretical understanding in areas such as algebra, analysis, number theory, topology, and differential equations. It is designed for students who are going to use their degree for academic jobs or in a few quantitative fields such as data analytics. Thus, the course has far more emphasis placed on proof-based aspects of learning and pedagogy and is thus different than an MSc. in Mathematics, which clearly has a more applied and scientific application.

Why Study MA Mathematics?

Pursuing MA Mathematics in India provides a strong basis for students with keen interest in abstract thinking and logical arguments. The program increases students' abstract problem-solving capabilities and creates possibilities for careers in teaching, research, or quantitative fields.

  • Academic Standing: A well regarded degree which suits students planning on going into research or teaching.
  • High Demand: Growing need for individuals qualified in quantitative reasoning and mathematical modeling.
  • Career Flexibility: Careers options in education, finance, analytics and government jobs after completing MA Mathematics.
  • Research Prospects: Provides an excellent foundation for either a Ph.D program in India or overseas.

Who should study MA Mathematics?

MA Mathematics is ideal for any student who loves numbers, logic and abstract reasoning. It is appropriate for:

  • Students planning on teaching or academic careers
  • Aspirants preparing for UGC NET/JRF or UPSC
  • Students who want to continue their studies in an M.Phil or Ph.D.
  • Students who would like to upskill with mathematical data analysis.

MA Mathematics Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who want to enroll in an MA in Mathematics need some academic minimum qualifications for eligibility. These minimum academic qualifications help students gain a foundation that is typically needed for successful study of Mathematics at the graduate level.
