MAT Difficulty Level 2026: September PBT Paper Review

2 minute read

Update on 13 Sep, 2026, 02:31 PM IST

The MAT September 2026 PBT was conducted on September 13, 2026, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Initial feedback indicates that the paper was easy overall, although the difficulty was not uniform across all five sections. Language Comprehension and Intelligence & Critical Reasoning were relatively easier, while Mathematical Skills and Data Analysis & Sufficiency required more time and calculation. Economic and Business Environment was largely manageable.

The two-hour duration remained an important factor in the paper. With 150 questions to be attempted within 120 minutes and no separate sectional time limit, candidates had to decide quickly which questions to attempt and which ones to leave.

MAT Difficulty Level 2026 at a Glance

Section Difficulty Level Paper Review
Language Comprehension Easy Direct questions with familiar verbal ability and reading comprehension areas
Intelligence & Critical Reasoning Easy Mostly manageable reasoning questions
Mathematical Skills Moderate Required calculation and careful question selection
Data Analysis & Sufficiency Moderate Data interpretation and sufficiency questions took comparatively more time
Economic & Business Environment Easy Questions covered business, economy and general current-affairs areas
Overall Easy to Moderate Manageable paper, with time management being the main challenge

The overall assessment is based on initial post-exam feedback and is not an official difficulty rating issued by AIMA.

How Difficult Was MAT September PBT 2026?

The September PBT did not appear to be a conceptually difficult paper. The bigger challenge was speed.

Candidates had to handle 150 questions in 120 minutes, giving them limited time to spend on lengthy calculations or questions with multiple steps. As a result, candidates who maintained a steady pace had an advantage over those who spent too long on individual questions.

The paper can therefore be placed in the easy to moderate range rather than being described as uniformly easy.

The difference was more visible in the Quantitative and Data Analysis sections. These sections demanded greater calculation and selection of questions, while Language Comprehension and Intelligence & Critical Reasoning offered relatively more direct questions.

MAT Section-Wise Difficulty Level 2026

MAT Language Comprehension Difficulty

Language Comprehension was among the easier sections of the September PBT. The section included reading comprehension along with questions based on vocabulary, sentence correction, fill-in-the-blanks, synonyms, antonyms, phrases and related verbal ability areas.

Candidates with good reading speed and basic command of English were likely to complete this section without spending excessive time on individual questions.

Difficulty: Easy

MAT Intelligence & Critical Reasoning Difficulty

The Intelligence & Critical Reasoning section was also reported to be relatively easy. Questions included areas such as blood relations, coding-decoding, series, Venn diagrams and comparison-based reasoning.

The section rewarded quick identification of the underlying pattern. Lengthy calculations were not the main concern, making question selection and speed more important.

Difficulty: Easy

MAT Mathematical Skills Difficulty

Mathematical Skills was comparatively more demanding than the verbal and reasoning sections.

Questions were drawn from areas including percentages, profit and loss, interest, time and work, partnership, algebra, geometry, mensuration, ratio and proportion, probability and permutation and combination.

The difficulty was less about unfamiliar concepts and more about the time required to solve calculation-heavy questions. Candidates who quickly identified direct questions could save time for questions requiring more computation.

Difficulty: Moderate

MAT Data Analysis & Sufficiency Difficulty

Data Analysis & Sufficiency was another section where candidates had to manage their time carefully. The paper included data-based questions involving graphs, charts, comparisons and data sufficiency.

Reading the information correctly before starting the calculation was important. Spending too much time on one data set could affect the number of questions attempted in the remaining sections.

Difficulty: Moderate

MAT Economic & Business Environment Difficulty

Economic & Business Environment was broadly manageable. Questions covered areas related to business, the economy, politics, trade, sports, medicine, personalities and awards.

The section could favour candidates who had regularly followed current affairs and business-related developments.

Difficulty: Easy

What Made MAT September 2026 PBT Challenging?

The paper's main challenge was time management rather than a high conceptual difficulty level.

Candidates had 120 minutes for 150 questions. Since there was no sectional time restriction, they could distribute their time across sections according to their strengths. This also meant that spending too much time on Mathematics or Data Analysis could reduce the time available for easier questions elsewhere.

For this reason, the number of attempts alone should not be used to judge performance. Accuracy remains important because MAT carries 0.25 marks negative marking for an incorrect answer.

MAT Difficulty Level 2026 and Expected Cutoff

An easy paper can increase the importance of accuracy and the number of questions attempted. However, the September 2026 MAT cutoff cannot be determined from difficulty level alone.

The final score and percentile will depend on the candidate's performance and AIMA's scoring and normalization process. College-wise admission requirements will also vary.

Candidates can check the detailed paper review and attempt estimates on the MAT Exam Analysis 2026 page.

MAT September 2026 PBT vs CBT

The September MAT CBT 2026 is scheduled for September 20, 2026. Candidates appearing in the CBT should not assume that the paper will be identical to the September PBT, even though the examination framework remains the same.

The PBT analysis is therefore useful as a preparation reference, particularly for understanding the level of questions and the importance of speed, but it should not be treated as a prediction of the exact CBT paper.

FAQs on MAT Difficulty Level 2026

What was the difficulty level of MAT September PBT 2026?

The MAT September 2026 PBT was easy overall, with Mathematics and Data Analysis & Sufficiency being relatively more demanding.

Which section was the easiest in MAT September PBT 2026?

Language Comprehension and Intelligence & Critical Reasoning were among the easier sections based on initial paper feedback.

Which section was difficult in MAT September PBT 2026?

Mathematical Skills and Data Analysis & Sufficiency were comparatively more time-consuming.

Was MAT September PBT 2026 difficult?

No. The paper was not considered difficult overall. The main challenge was completing 150 questions within the two-hour duration.

Will an easy MAT paper increase the cutoff?

It may increase competition for higher percentiles, but the actual cutoff depends on scores, percentiles, institute-level requirements and the applicant pool.

Is MAT CBT 2026 likely to have the same difficulty level as PBT?

The overall level may remain comparable, but the exact difficulty and question mix can differ between test administrations.
