• Updated on  Aug 02, 2025, by Kirti Mehendiratta

The Doctor of Medicine is a postgraduate degree pursued after completing MBBS and a one-year mandatory internship. It is a 3-year higher medical program, and it offers training in specialization in such areas as Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Radiology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, and a huge number of others. Graduates of the MD program can work with complex clinical activity, diagnostics, and patients in their specialty. The course is very competitive and is regarded as a big stride towards becoming a consultant or specialist physician within the Indian context.

In India, admissions are mostly done in the MD program based on performance in nationally conducted entrance tests, including INI-CET and NEET-PG (in general, PG medical seats). The interested candidates should have a recognized MBBS degree and a completed internship training (or currently undergoing the internship training) before the cutoff deadline. The admissions procedures involve online application, entrance test, centralized counseling and document verification. Eligibility, fees, and selection criteria are also slightly different according to the institution, although all the applicants shall have to meet the regulatory standards set down by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
