GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) is a three-year diploma course, making the students pursue a diverse career in the healthcare and nursing industry. The course helps to learn the concepts of patient care, nursing, midwifery and community health, which include medical-surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing and maternal health.

 

Once a student has passed GNM, they can be employed in hospitals, clinics, primary health care institutions, nursing homes, community health initiatives and NGOs. Ordinary job titles are Staff Nurse, Community Health Nurse, Ward Supervisor, Home Care Nurse, ICU Nurse and Midwife. Which are the most important skills that GNM students?

Communication, empathy and teamwork are the other skills that a GNM student should aim to acquire in addition to clinical and patient care skills. Education in control of infections, keeping records, and usage of computers basic skills, are also becoming critical.
