BTech IIT Cut off 2025

• Updated on  Aug 08, 2025, by Kirti Mehendiratta

Admission to the BTech Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) program at IITs is granted through the Joint JEE Advanced. Students first need to clear the JEE Main exam to qualify for the JEE Advanced. Only those with strong performance in JEE Advanced can secure a seat, and eligibility does not extend to diploma holders for lateral entry.

Cutoff ranks for B Tech ECE differ drastically from IIT to IIT based on factors such as the credibility of the institute, past placement record, teaching quality, and research activity. Premier IITs like Bombay, Delhi, and Madras have very low closing ranks for the General category, as a rule, less than 1000. Mid-ranking IITs like Roorkee and Guwahati fall in the bracket of 1400–2000, whereas newer IITs like Bhubaneswar, Patna, and Jammu can have closing ranks exceeding 5000. Cutoffs also differ according to category (SC/ST/OBC/EWS), and women-only seat quotas affect the ranks as well.

IITs Cutoff for BTech ECE FAQs

How are the cutoff ranks different across various IITs for ECE admissions?

Cutoff ranks for BTech ECE differ substantially: premier IITs such as Delhi, Bombay, and Madras have significantly lower (more competitive) closing ranks, usually in the range of 500–1500 for General.

What are the reasons behind variations in IIT BTech ECE cut-off ranks from one year to another?

Fluctuations are due to shifts in the level of difficulty in the JEE Advanced exam every year. The number of total applicants and available seats also has a major influence on cutoff ranks. Differences in student preferences for some branches or IITs can alter demand and cutoffs. Other influences include shifts in reservation policies and the number of candidates who get through counseling

Which of the IITs have the lowest closing ranks for female candidates in B Tech ECE?

At the top IITs, such as Delhi, Roorkee, and Guwahati, the female-only closing ranks tend to be the lowest. Female-only closing ranks at Roorkee and Guwahati in recent years have tended to be below 4000. New IITs have higher female-only closing ranks, at times over 10,000. Official JoSAA statistics should be referred to for the latest and best available figures

What are the reasons for the fluctuations in IIT BTech Electronics and Communication Engineering cutoffs every year?

Yearly variations are primarily because of variations in the toughness of JEE Advanced and the number of aspirants appearing. Seat availability and reservation quotas also contribute significantly towards changing cutoff ranks. Student demand and trends for certain IITs or courses may lead to demand varying from year to year. JoSAA counseling rounds and upgradations also affect final cutoff patterns

Why does IIT Delhi have such high demand for B Tech ECE admissions every time?

IIT Delhi is well placed and is known for its high-quality teaching and research activities. It has good industry links and excellent placement opportunities for B Tech ECE candidates. The fact that it is located in the national capital gives access to internships, startups, and blue-chip recruiters. All these make IIT Delhi a leader among engineering aspirants and support a consistently strong demand
