The scoring is done for mandatory sections only, such as English, Reading and Maths. For multiple-choice tests, +1 is awarded for one correct answer and no marks for the wrong answer. Check below to know how ACT Scores are calculated.
- First, the number of questions is counted on each test that candidates answered correctly.
- Then ACT converts the raw scores (number of correct answers on each test) to "scale scores”, which are 1-36.
- Candidates’ Composite score and each test score (English, mathematics, reading, science) range from 1 (low) to 36 (high). The Composite score is the average of the four multiple-choice test scores, rounded to the nearest whole number.
- Fractions less than one-half are rounded down; fractions one-half or more are rounded up.
- Each reporting category includes the total number of questions and the total number of questions in that category that candidates answered correctly, and the percentage of questions answered correctly.
How To Request a Copy of Test Questions and Answers
On certain test dates, candidates are permitted to order (for an additional fee) a copy of the multiple-choice test questions used to determine their scores, including a list of their answers and the answer key. If any candidates took the writing section, they will also receive a copy of the writing prompt, scoring guidelines, and the scores assigned to the essays. However, candidates must note that this service is not available for all test dates and is available only for National testing or Special testing in the United States, US territories, and Puerto Rico.
