RBI Assistant Exam Pattern 2026 is designed to evaluate candidates across skill areas related to numerical ability, language proficiency, reasoning ability, general awareness and computer awareness. The exam is conducted in a multi-staged process including Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam, and Language Proficiency Test (LPT). Candidates must ensure their understanding for the exam pattern to strategise preparation and plan key areas accordingly, which is mentioned in the official notification released on February 16, 2026.

 

The Preliminary and Mains examination are conducted in a computer-based test (CBT) mode at designated examination centres, while Language Proficiency Test (LPT) is conducted in an offline mode at RBI regional offices. It must be noted that the preliminary stage is qualifying in nature and that the marks obtained in the mains examination are only considered for the preparation of the final merit list. The Language Proficiency Test is also qualifying and passing this stage is mandatory for the final selection through the recruitment.

RBI Assistant Exam Pattern 2026 involves evaluation of the candidates across three stages– Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam, and Language Proficiency Test (LPT). The Mains Examination is more detailed than the Preliminary Examination, additionally covering computer knowledge and general awareness as well. The Preliminary Examination is a screening-based stage which qualifies the candidates for the subsequent stage of mains examination. It tests basic skills related to Numerical Ability, Reasoning Ability, English Language, with sectional timing provided for each section. This stage consists of 100 questions carrying a total of 100 marks (to be done within a time duration of 60 minutes). Negative marking is applicable where 1 mark is awarded for each correct response and 1/4th mark is deducted for every incorrect response made.

The Mains Examination is the most important stage as the marks obtained in this stage are added for the final merit calculation. This stage evaluates candidates on skill areas related to Numerical Ability, Reasoning Ability, English Language, Computer Knowledge, and General Awareness. The difficulty level of examination is advanced in this level, as compared to the preliminary examination stage, where this stage consists of 200 questions carrying a total of 200 marks (to be completed in a time duration of 135 minutes). Negative marking is applicable in this stage as well where 1 mark is awarded for each correct response and 1/4th mark is deducted for every incorrect response.

The Language Proficiency Test (LPT) evaluates candidate’s proficiency in the local language of the state applied for. This stage is qualifying in nature and considered mandatory to pass for the final selection in the examination. Candidates must be able to read, write, speak and understand the local language of that particular RBI office. The LPT stage is conducted in an offline mode at designated RBI regional offices. Even if a candidate has scored well in the Mains Examination and does not qualify for this stage, they won’t be shortlisted for selection.

RBI Assistant 2026 follows a defined marking scheme where Negative marking is applicable.
