The BSc Forestry degree is offered in government and private colleges across India, and the fee that can be taken is very different depending on whether the college is government or private. The course fee as a whole in government colleges comes to INR 20,000 to INR 60,000 for the whole duration of 4 years, which is extremely low for students from diverse backgrounds. But private colleges can be from INR 1.5 lakh to INR 4 lakh considering the infrastructure, faculty, location, and other amenities. BSc Forestry is a 4-year bachelor's degree course in eight semesters with specializations in forest management and forest science and wildlife and natural resources. Subjects under this are Silviculture, Forest Ecology, Wildlife Management, Tree Genetics, and Forest Policy & Legislation. Theory is followed by enormous amounts of fieldwork and practical training, typically in the form of internships from the forest department or environmental organizations. After complete studies, the students become eligible for forest service personnel, animal husbandry research jobs, conservation programs, and even postgraduate in forestry or environmental science. The course is regulated by ICAR guidelines in majority agricultural universities.

BSc Forestry Fees FAQs

Why are the fees for BSc Forestry lower in government agricultural universities than in general science colleges?

Government agricultural universities like TNAU, UAS Dharwad, or FRI Dehradun receive huge amounts of funding from ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) and state governments. This funding subsidizes tuition fees, making them much lower—usually less than INR 60,000 for the whole 4-year course. On the other hand, general science colleges might not get to use the same funding sources and also do not have as large a field infrastructure as is available through the ICAR system, and therefore they are forced to impose additional fees for similar programmes.

Do forestry colleges impose additional fees on outdoor training, field trips, or internships?

Yes, some forestry colleges individually ask for field training, industrial visits, forest camps, and internships, particularly if they are organized outside the state or with government forest departments. Although the government colleges tend to keep them low or factor them as part of the annual academic charges, private institutions can charge anything between INR 10,000 to INR 50,000 per annum based on the destination and type of program. Always ask for a clear break-up of practical training charges in advance.

Is BSc Forestry in southern or northern Indian states more affordable?

Yes, on average, southern states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have relatively cheaper BSc Forestry courses from government colleges such as TNAU and UAS Bangalore, with the total fee being less than INR 50,000–INR 90,000 for the entire duration of the course. In the north, although institutions such as FRI Dehradun are well-respected, they charge slightly more in terms of fees (up to INR 3–4 lakh total) for tuition and hostel fees, particularly for general category or non-resident students. Nevertheless, both zones have top-notch academic standards—so ultimately, the decision usually comes down to distance and budget.

Do students qualify for forest department-sponsored scholarships to help pay their BSc Forestry tuition?

Yes, in most states, BSc Forestry students are available for forest department or state agriculture scholarships, especially from Scheduled Tribe (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC), and OBC categories. For example, tribal students belonging to northeastern or central Indian states usually receive 100% fee concessions, and merit students in Tamil Nadu and Gujarat can apply for ICAR, National Talent Scholarships, or Chief Minister's scholarships. Some scholarships even cover hostel and travel costs for mandatory fieldwork. Students should regularly check both college and state government portals to apply on time.
