BTech Food Science Syllabus

• Updated on 27 Jun, 2025 by Akangsha Das

BTech in Food Science is an inter-disciplinary undergraduate program that involves the application of food chemistry, microbiology, nutrition, and engineering sciences in designing and enhancing food products and processes. The course is structured to provide with theory and practice skills through laboratory practice, industrial exposure, and project work. Most important subject of the first semesters are Fundamentals of Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology, and Principles of Food Preservation, and then Food Packaging, Dairy Technology, Food Quality Control, and Food Safety Management. Practical sessions, internship, and small projects are also addressed to prepare students for real food industry-related issues.

Generally requiring 8 semesters of study to be completed within a time frame of 4 years, BTech Food Science is AICTE and UGC recognized and is provided by highly rated Indian institutes such as NIFT-TEM, CFTRI, and some IITs and state universities. Allied disciplines such as biochemistry, biotechnology, and process engineering are also delivered as part of the course by the students. The course should be capable of providing the graduates with competence to get selected for food production, R&D, quality checking, and regulatory positions. The students will most likely be placed in FMCG companies, food safety organizations, or research centers, or pursue higher studies in food technology or allied sciences.
