Meghalaya ANM Admission

• Updated on  Aug 14, 2025, by Akangsha Das

ANM Admission is a state-based admission mechanism conducted in Meghalaya on an annual basis by state authorities to recruit female candidates as permanent residents of the state. Application begins in the middle of the year on an online form issued by the Directorate of Health Services. No entrance test is required, and joining is made on the basis of Class 12 (10+2) marks. Candidates needed to be between 17 years and 30 years and medically fit. For document verification and counselling, shortlisted candidates are invited to nursing colleges in Shillong, Tura, and other parts of the state.

The ANM course is a 2-year diploma that equips the student with the skills to deliver the basics in nursing, maternal and child health, and nutrition, along with sanitation and disease preventive subjects. The practicum component is in the form of placements in PHCs, CHCs, and district hospitals. On completion, they are registered with the State Nursing Council and act as the frontline health workers, primarily in rural and underserved regions, to assist/provide the health programs, including population-based health programs in all parts of Meghalaya.

Meghalaya ANM Eligibility Criteria

The Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) diploma course in Meghalaya is designed to train competent female health workers who will perform at the grassroots level of the healthcare delivery system. The admission is regulated by eligibility requirements to ensure that prospective candidates are adequately equipped academically and in terms of physical fitness to match the rigors of nursing and community health service work. The following are the major requirements that candidates need to meet:

  • Only women candidates are eligible to apply, and in the majority of instances, single status is preferred, particularly for government-owned institutions.
  • Applicants should be permanent residents of Meghalaya and must have valid proof of domicile.
  • Pass in Class 12 (10+2) from a recognized board in any stream (Arts/Science/Commerce) is compulsory, with at least 40% aggregate marks.
  • Applicants should be between the ages of 17 and 30 years at the time of admission. Relaxation of age up to 35 years is, however, usually permitted for the residents of Meghalaya.
  • The candidate should provide a valid medical fitness certificate to attest to the fact that he/she is physically and mentally fit to perform the nursing job.

Meghalaya ANM Entrance Exams

There is no entrance exam for admission to the Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife (ANM) course in Meghalaya. Admissions are based purely on the candidate’s performance in the 10+2 (Higher Secondary) examination. After the merit list is prepared from these marks, candidates participate in counseling sessions for seat allocation in various government and private nursing colleges across the state. This merit-based process makes the ANM course accessible without the pressure of entrance tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are married women eligible to get admitted to the ANM course in Meghalaya if they meet all other conditions?

Meghalaya, traditionally, favors admitting unmarried lady candidates for ANM, especially in institutionally sponsored ones like the Female Health Worker Training School. Married women can be admitted in some private colleges, if they fulfill the age, educational, and medical fitness criteria. Verify specific college regulations in advance before submitting an application.

Is a hostel facility offered to the ANM students of Shillong or Tura?

Yes, most of the government and mission-sponsored schools of nursing in Meghalaya, e.g., those in Shillong and Tura, offer hostel facility, especially for female students who come from rural or remote villages. These are usually situated within or near the campus and equipped with minimal facilities. Seats are few and taken normally on a first-come, first-served basis on receipt of confirmation of admission.

Are there reserved seats or quotas for tribal individuals in ANM admissions?

Yes. As the population of Meghalaya is predominantly tribal, Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates—especially from Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities—are given reserved seats and lower cut-offs in government-funded nursing colleges. The quota may differ from institution to institution, but the candidate should provide a genuine ST certificate to avail the concession.

What is the salary of an ANM in Meghalaya?

The salary of an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) in Meghalaya typically ranges from INR 25,000 to INR 30,000 per month, according to the Meghalaya Medical Services Recruitment Board.

Can Meghalaya ANM graduates directly go for GNM or B.Sc.Sc Nursing without any work experience?

ANM graduates are entitled to GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) and even B.Sc.Sc Nursing (Post-Basic) without any work experience, if they meet the academic and eligibility criteria as laid down by the Indian Nursing Council and the admitting college. However, preference may be given to students with 6 months to 1-year work experience by some colleges, especially for competitive seats.
