ANM Nursing: Admission 2025, Syllabus, Eligibility, Subjects, Colleges, Careers

• Updated on  Jun 26, 2025, by Akangsha Das

ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery) is a diploma program in nursing which trains health workers to provide elementary nursing care, specifically in rural and backwards areas. It focuses on maternal and child care, first aid, family planning, and community health. The course teaches students how to help during childbirth, immunisation, and sanitation drives.

The duration of the course is 2 years, followed by a 6-month hospital or primary health centre internship as practical training. ANM is usually taken up by those students who would like to step into the field of medicine early and secure employment in the healthcare industry without seeking a lengthy degree.

Despite its non-typical popularity among engineering graduates, ANM has become attractive to students in other streams because of its brief duration, work-life format, and immediate recruitment in government-run health institutions. Increased demand for paramedical personnel in India also makes it more attractive.

ANM eligibility is 10+2 in any stream (Science preferable) from a recognised board. Age of admission should be 17 years or more. Entrance tests or interviews might also be held by some institutes.

Future prospects after ANM are good. The graduates can be employed as Health Workers, ANMs in rural health centres, Community Health Workers, Home Nurses, or in government hospitals, NGOs, and maternity care units. Experienced ANMs, after obtaining further qualifications, can apply for GNM or B.Sc Nursing for their professional growth.

What is ANM Nursing?

ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwifery) Nursing is a diploma course in healthcare, which educates students in the delivery of basic nursing care and midwife services, with specific reference to rural and backward sections. The course handles the topics of community health, maternal and child health, first aid, and family welfare. The course is supplemented with practice skills to assist in delivery, immunization campaigns, and sanitation drives. ANM workers regularly serve as front-line health workers in government health facilities, primary health centers (PHCs), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and are basically tasked with strengthening public health outcomes.
