BDS General Surgery FAQs

What are the relevances of BDS (General Surgery Stream) in branching into government or other jobs in the private sector in the medical field?

BDS General Surgery-centered equips students with the basic knowledge in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and it plays a pivotal role in the practice of dentists both in the private and government sectors. The graduates of BDS could take up positions in government hospitals by means of NEET-PG or public health services examinations. There are numerous opportunities to work as a dental officer under the public health departments, the army, and PSU hospitals, in many states. It is also a way of experiencing doing MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) in Oral Surgery or other allied disciplines.

Does the BDS syllabus comprise interdisciplinary courses such as pharmacology, pathology, or general medicine?

Of course, BDS is an interdisciplinary subject, and in its initial couple of years, core subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Microbiology, General Medicine, and General Surgery are combined. Such subjects establish an ample medical foundation that boosts dental surgery training. In addition, students have a chance to implement such knowledge in the clinical reality in hospitals during internships following surgery, anesthesia, and patient treatment.

What opportunities for higher education lie after studying BDS (General Surgery)?

Students are allowed to take MDS in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, or Orthodontics after BDS. Otherwise, they may consider any non-clinical subjects such as MPH (Master of Public Health), MBA in Hospital Management, PG Diploma in Clinical Research, or Forensic Odontology. To people who have aspirations to perform research and be academicians, a Ph.D. in Dental Sciences or Biomedical Sciences is also an option. International alternatives like DDS (USA) or additional licensing examinations abroad (NDEB, ORE, ADC) are favored by the aspirants.

In what ways does the BDS course prepare students for modern technology and digital practices in contemporary dentistry?

BDS curriculum today consists of learning in digital radiology, CAD/CA-Dentistry, laser technology, and tele-dentistry. They are exposed to dental management software, patient records systems, as well as simulation labs to train in surgery. These instruments contribute to accuracy and allow graduates who cope with the ever-changing pace of digital dentistry.

Does the BDS General Surgery stream have any scope for students having a non-science background?

No, BDS (as all medical/dental degrees) is simply restricted to students having a Science background in 10+2 (In particular those who have done Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as subjects). The candidates must also qualify for NEET-UG. Arts/ Commerce Students are also not eligible for BDS.
