Why Study BA Hons Sociology?

Sociology is regarded as one of the most interesting and captivating fields of learning because it studies social relations and behaviours of people in institutions and relations. It examines the way society affects people and the way people affect the society. Following are some of the reasons that justify the choice of a BA Hons in Sociology:

  • You’ll learn how society really works—beyond what’s visible: From why certain communities stay poor to how power operates in everyday life, sociology helps you understand the "why" behind social patterns that often go unquestioned.
  • It sharpens your perspective on current events: Whether it's a protest, policy change, or viral trend—sociology teaches you to see the deeper social forces at play, not just the headlines.
  • You’ll gain hands-on skills in research and analysis: The course doesn’t just stay in books. You'll learn how to conduct interviews, analyze surveys, and interpret social data—skills used in jobs like journalism, policy-making, and development work.
  • You explore real issues like inequality, caste, gender, and digital impact: Sociology helps you make sense of everyday realities—how discrimination operates, how social media influences people, or why certain voices are unheard.
  • It opens doors to multiple career paths: Unlike technical degrees tied to one field, sociology graduates can work in NGOs, civil services, research firms, media houses, education, or go on to do a Master’s, MSW, or even law school.

Both degrees study social structures and social problems in the society, the B.A. Sociology (Hons) degree is more research-based and theory oriented and mainly involves abstract analyses of institutions, cultures and social patterns. B.A. in Social Work, on the other hand, has more focus on the practical part and is supposed to introduce students directly to the field activities like counseling, rehabilitation, or community services. Sociology and social work are the two main branches of HSW; the first offers a wider intellectual basis in academia or policy-related occupations and the latter the direct-service careers within the healthcare environment, non-governmental organizations, or at the governmental level.
