JoSAA 2026 Round-wise Seat Allotment Schedule
The table below covers the full allotment calendar of JoSAA Counselling 2026, from the mock rounds through to the final Round 6. Rounds 1 to 5 cover IITs, IISc, and all NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats. Round 6 is the final round for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs only; IITs and IISc do not participate in Round 6. Tabulated below are the JoSAA Counselling 2026 Dates for students’ reference:
How to Check JoSAA 2026 Seat Allotment Result?
The seat allotment result is available only through the official portal using login credentials. The same steps apply after every round. The result shows the allotted institute, programme, category, quota, and the available response options for that round.
1.Visit josaa.nic.in.
2.Click on the Seat Allotment Result link for the current round.
3.Log in using the JEE Main application number and password.
4.The allotment details appear on the dashboard, including institute, programme, and quota.
5.Download the allotment letter and save it immediately.
6.Review the details and select a response option within the response window.
If no seat is allotted in a particular round, the dashboard displays 'No Seat Allotted', and the candidate is automatically carried forward to the next round without any action needed.
JoSAA Mock Allotment 2026: What It Is and How to Use It
Mock allotment is a preview of where a candidate would be placed if the actual allotment ran at that moment, based on the choices filled and the candidate's rank. It is not binding, and choices could be freely modified between Mock Allotment 1 and the final lock on June 11.
•Mock Allotment 1 was released on June 8, based on choices filled until June 7 at 8:00 PM.
•Mock Allotment 2 was released on June 10, based on choices filled until June 9 at 5:00 PM.
•If the mock result shows a seat the candidate would accept, it is worth checking whether all realistic higher preferences have been added above it before the lock deadline.
•If the mock result shows no seat, the top choices were likely out of reach at that rank. Reviewing previous year closing ranks and adding mid-range options helps.
•After reviewing Mock Allotment 1, candidates can refine the preference list and check whether Mock Allotment 2 reflects an improved outcome.

JoSAA Seat Acceptance Fee 2026
The seat acceptance fee must be paid before a candidate can select Freeze, Float, Slide, or Withdraw. JoSAA 2026 allows pre-payment of this fee before the declaration of the allotment results, to save time during the tight response window.
•The fee is paid once across all rounds. There is no repeat payment in Round 2 or later.
•It is adjusted against the institute's admission fee at the time of final joining. It is not an additional cost.
•If a candidate withdraws after paying, a portion is forfeited as a penalty, and the remainder is refunded to the registered bank account.
•Pre-payment is optional but recommended, as it removes one step from the response window after each round.
How to Download the JoSAA Seat Allotment Letter 2026?
The JoSAA Seat Allotment Letter is the official document confirming a candidate's allotted institute, program, and category. It is required during online reporting and document verification, and must be downloaded after every round in which a seat is allotted.
1.Visit the official JoSAA portal at josaa.nic.in.
2.Click on the Seat Allotment Result link for the relevant round.
3.Log in using the JoSAA Application Number and Password.
4.Click Login to access the dashboard.
5.If a seat has been allotted, click Download Allotment Letter.
6.The letter opens in PDF format. Click Download or Print to save a copy.
What to Do After JoSAA Seat Allotment?
After every round in which a seat is allotted, candidates must choose one of four response options within the round's response window. Choosing the right option is one of the most important decisions in the entire process, as it directly affects whether a better seat can still be secured.
Freeze
Freezing confirms the current seat permanently. The candidate exits the allotment pool, completes document verification and admission formalities, and the JoSAA process ends for that candidate.
•Use Freeze when the allotted seat is the first or second preference.
•Use Freeze when no higher preference is realistically within reach at the current rank.
•Freeze is compulsory in Round 5 for IIT/IISc seats and in Round 6 for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats, since these are the final rounds for each category. There is no auto-freeze; an active selection is required, or the seat is cancelled.
Float
Float means the candidate accepts the current seat while asking JoSAA to check whether any higher preference becomes available in the next round. If a better option opens up, the candidate is automatically moved to it. If not, the current seat is retained. Float carries no risk to the current allotment.
•Use Float to stay open to upgrades across any institute on the preference list.
•Use Float when the current seat is not among the top preferences and a better option may still come through.
Slide
Slide is similar to Float but narrower in scope. Instead of considering all higher preferences across institutes, Slide only checks higher preferences at the same institute where the candidate is currently allotted.
For example, if a candidate is allotted Mechanical Engineering at NIT Warangal, and the preference list above it includes CSE at IIT Hyderabad, ECE at NIT Warangal, and Civil Engineering at NIT Warangal, choosing Slide means the system only checks ECE and Civil at NIT Warangal. CSE at IIT Hyderabad is ignored entirely.
•Use Slide when satisfied with the current institute but seeking a better branch within it.
•Use Slide when unwilling to risk moving to a different institute, even for a higher-preference programme elsewhere.
Withdraw
Withdraw cancels the allotted seat entirely and removes the candidate from all future JoSAA rounds.
•Use Withdraw only when firmly committed to a different admission path, such as a private university, state counselling, or a gap year.
•A portion of the seat acceptance fee is forfeited upon withdrawal.
•Candidates remain eligible for CSAB Counselling 2026 after withdrawing (for NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats only). IIT and IISc seats are permanently off the table once a candidate exits JoSAA.
IITs and IISc vs NITs: The Round 5 and Round 6 Rule
This is one of the most common sources of confusion and lost seats in JoSAA counselling, and it is worth understanding clearly before the later rounds begin.
No upgrade is possible after a candidate's applicable final round. For example, a candidate holding an IIT seat in Round 4 can still choose Float or Slide to try for a better IIT branch in Round 5. But in Round 5 itself, the seat must be frozen, or it is lost entirely, since IITs and IISc do not participate in Round 6.
Documents to Upload After JoSAA Seat Allotment 2026
After each round of allotment, candidates must upload documents during the online reporting window. Having all documents scanned and ready before Round 1 avoids last-minute pressure during the typically short 2 to 3-day response window. The required documents are listed below:
•Class 10 certificate and marksheet (for date of birth proof)
•Class 12 marksheet and passing certificate
•JEE Main 2026 Admit Card and Scorecard
•JEE Advanced 2026 Admit Card and Scorecard (for IIT/IISc applicants only)
•Provisional seat allotment letter (downloaded after each round)
•Recent passport-size photograph
Required Based on Category
•OBC-NCL: Certificate issued in the current financial year, explicitly mentioning Non-Creamy Layer status. A certificate from a previous financial year is not valid.
•SC/ST: Valid caste certificate issued by a competent state authority.
•EWS: EWS certificate issued for the current financial year.
•PwD: Valid disability certificate.
For NIT Candidates Claiming the Home State (HS) Quota
A state domicile or residency certificate confirming the home state is required. Without this document, a candidate may be placed under the Other State (OS) quota even if genuinely eligible for the home state quota at that NIT.
What is CSAB?
After JoSAA Round 6, any seats that remain vacant at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs move to CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) for supplementary counselling. This is a separate process from JoSAA.
•IITs and IISc do not participate in CSAB. CSAB covers only NIT, IIIT, and GFTI residual seats.
•Candidates must register separately at csab.nic.in. JoSAA registration does not carry over to CSAB.
•CSAB registration is free.
•Candidates who voluntarily withdrew from JoSAA are eligible for CSAB.
•Candidates who accepted a JoSAA seat and completed admission are generally not eligible for CSAB.
•CSAB runs two streams: CSAB Special (for NIT system residual seats) and CSAB-NEUT (for candidates from North-East states and Union Territories).
JoSAA Seat Allotment 2026: Institutes and Total Seats
JoSAA 2026 covers over 120 participating institutes with a total of 67,323 seats, including the newly added IISc Bangalore. The table below shows the approximate breakdown across institute categories.
JoSAA Seat Allotment 2026 FAQs
When was JoSAA 2026 Round 1 seat allotment released?
JoSAA 2026 Round 1 seat allotment was released on June 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM on josaa.nic.in. Candidates log in using their JEE Main application number and password to check the result.
What is the difference between Float and Slide in JoSAA?
Float considers the entire preference list above the current allotment, meaning a candidate could be upgraded to a better programme at any higher-preference institute. Slide only considers higher preferences at the same institute where the candidate is currently allotted. Both retain the existing seat and carry no risk.
Is Float safe? Can a candidate lose the current seat by choosing Float?
No. If a candidate chooses Float and no better option comes up in the next round, the current seat remains untouched. A candidate only moves if a higher-preference seat becomes available. The only ways to lose a seat are by withdrawing or by missing the response deadline.
How many rounds are there in JoSAA 2026?
JoSAA 2026 has six allotment rounds. IITs and IISc participate in Rounds 1 to 5 only. NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs participate in all six rounds. Round 5 is the final round for IIT/IISc seats, and Round 6 is the final round for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats.
What happens if a candidate does not respond to a JoSAA allotment?
If no action is taken within the round-specific response window, the candidate is treated as having exited the process and the allotted seat is cancelled. There is no auto-freeze or automatic extension. Every round requires an active response.
What is the JoSAA seat acceptance fee?
The seat acceptance fee is INR 35,000 for General, OBC-NCL, and EWS candidates, and INR 15,000 for SC, ST, and PwD candidates. Pre-payment is possible from June 2, before Round 1 results. The fee is adjusted against the institute's admission fee when the candidate joins.
Can a candidate participate in both JoSAA and state engineering counselling at the same time?
Yes. JoSAA and state counselling processes such as MHT CET CAP, WBJEE, and AP EAMCET are independent of each other. Participating in one does not affect eligibility for the other.
What is CSAB and who should register?
CSAB conducts supplementary counselling after JoSAA Round 6 for vacant seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. IITs and IISc do not participate. Candidates who did not receive a JoSAA seat, or who voluntarily withdrew, should register separately and for free at csab.nic.in.
What is the HS quota at NITs?
Each NIT reserves 50% of its seats for candidates from its home state (HS quota) and 50% for candidates from all other states (OS quota). HS quota closing ranks are typically several thousand ranks lower than OS closing ranks for the same branch, so eligible candidates should add HS quota choices to their preference list.
Is IISc Bangalore part of JoSAA 2026?
Yes. IISc Bangalore is participating in JoSAA counselling for the first time in 2026, offering four new BTech programmes through the JEE Advanced rank-based allotment process.
