Should You Take NMAT Retake?
Candidates can take up to 3 NMAT attempts in one testing cycle. This includes 1 main attempt and 2 retakes. A retake is a good option to improve a candidate’s score in the exam, but this option is not for everyone. Candidates must read the pointers below before deciding if an NMAT retake is a good option for them, or they should stick to their first attempt only.

Who Should Take NMAT Retake?
- Candidates whose score is below the expected cutoff of their target college should take a retake. However, candidates must make sure that the college they are targeting accepts a retake score.
- If candidates missed the sectional cutoff in one section but performed well in others, they can take a retake to improve their score. This is because the total NMAT score is the sum of all three equally weighted sections.
- If candidates could not perform well due to nervousness, poor time management, or unexpectedly tough questions, they can improve their basic concepts and retake the NMAT exam.
- There is a minimum gap of 7 days between the exams, and the exam window will remain open until December 20, 2026. This means candidates have enough time to improve their preparation and practice. If they have the confidence to improve their mistakes in the first attempt through better preparation, they should go for an NMAT retake.
Candidates can check NMAT Score vs Percentile to understand what percentile they can get based on their NMAT scores.
Who Should Not Take NMAT Retake?
- If a candidate’s target is NMIMS Mumbai, they should not take a retake. This is because NMIMS Mumbai considers only the first NMAT score. Candidates should always check their target college’s score acceptance policy before registering for a retake.
- If a candidate’s score has already cleared the cutoff of their target college, they should avoid taking a retake. This will only cost them money and does not make much change.
- If a candidate’s preparation has remained the same and they have not changed their strategy, they should not take a retake, as it will usually give a similar result.
NMAT Retake FAQs
Can I retake after a no-show at NMAT?
Yes, as long as you haven’t used all 3 attempts. A no-show is not free, though: GMAC counts no-shows within the maximum of 3 attempts (first attempt plus 2 retakes). If your scorecard shows No Show, NDA Refused or Exam Incomplete, you can schedule a new slot after 24 hours. You still need to pay the applicable fee and book within the window (Nov 3 to Dec 17, 2026 for retakes).
Is the old NMAT score deleted after retake?
No. Your earlier scores stay on record, and the scorecard shows all attempts. An NMAT scorecard shows the scores from the original and both retake attempts. A lower retake score does not cancel or replace your earlier one.
Which NMAT score gets sent to colleges?
You choose the colleges (up to 5 are included in the fee), but each college decides which attempt it considers. GMAC advises candidates to check each accepting school’s website for its policy on multiple attempts. For example, NMIMS accepts only the first valid NMAT score, so a retake won’t help there. Some other colleges consider the best score, but check each one before registering for a retake.
How many times can I take NMAT in 2026?
Up to 3 times in the testing window: 1 main attempt and 2 retakes, including any no-shows.
What is the minimum gap between two NMAT attempts?
7 days, according to GMAC’s FAQ, which states a mandatory 15-day gap between attempts. Plan your slots early so the second and third attempts fit before December 17.
What are the NMAT 2026 retake dates?
Retake registration and scheduling run from November 3 to December 17, 2026.
What is the NMAT retake fee?
The NMAT retake fee is INR 3,000 + applicable taxes. Candidates will have to pay a separate retake fee for each attempt. The fee for rescheduling is INR 1200 + applicable taxes.
Can I change my retake slot?
Yes, through rescheduling, but not within 72 hours of the exam. The rescheduling fee is INR 1,200 plus taxes. The rescheduling window closes on December 17, 2026.
Can I choose a different exam mode for a retake?
Yes. You select the mode (test centre or online proctored at home) when you register for the retake, as it’s chosen per attempt.
Should I retake NMAT if my score is already good?
Not necessarily. If your score already clears your target colleges’ cutoffs, or your target college counts only the first attempt, a retake may add nothing.
