Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV), Jabalpur (MP) came into existence on 1st October 1964. JNKVV is a cent per cent government-funded State Agricultural University carrying out government-funded research projects for agricultural development in the State of Madhya Pradesh. With the help of the state government, the largest multi-campus University at Jabalpur, in the centre of India, was named after the architect of modern India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru based on the suggestions of the Radhakrishnan Commission (1949) on the idea of the Establishment of an Agricultural University. A strategy was conceived to bridge the gap between the experts and the farmers by the Joint Indo-American Team on Agricultural Research and Education in 1954-55 and 1959-60 on the trends of Land Grant Colleges in the USA. Jawaharlal Nehru Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya (JNKVV) was established on 1st October 1964 and inaugurated by the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Smt. Indira Gandhi.
The Central Administrative Building of the University is situated nearly 7 km North of Jabalpur town on National Highway 7. The University was established by bringing over six Government colleges of Agriculture, two Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry colleges and 26 Research Stations under an act of the Madhya Pradesh Legislature, which came into effect in 1963 and statutes were formulated.
The University had to bid farewell to the establishment of sister universities Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), Raipur, Chhattisgarh in 1987, Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, Gwalior, MP in 2008 and Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University, Jabalpur, MP in 2009.
