The College of Engineering, Anantapur was established at Guindy, Madras in 1946 and was transferred to Anantapur in 1948. The college was affiliated to Madras University between 1946-1955 and to Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupathi between 1955-1972. In 1972, by a State Legislature Act, JNT University was formed at Hyderabad and the College of Engineering, Anantapur came under the fold of JNTU. Subsequently, during the year 2008, by an AP State Legislature Act, JNTU was trifurcated into three autonomous universities viz., JNTU, Hyderabad, JNTU, Kakinada and JNTU Anantapur. JNTU College of Engineering, Anantapur was converted into a constituent college of JNTUA and was re-named as JNTUA College of Engineering, Anantapur.
