BSc Nautical Science FAQs

Can a student suffering from color blindness sit for BSc Nautical Science through any special concessions?

No, color blindness is an absolute disqualifier for deck officer positions because of the essential role of color perception in navigation (e.g., signal flags, lights, buoys). Regulators such as the IMO and DG Shipping require color vision to be complete as part of the medical fitness requirements. Waivers or accommodations are not permitted with this condition.

What is the place of celestial navigation in the GPS era, and is it still being taught in BSc Nautical Science?

Yes, celestial navigation is still included in the syllabus. Although GPS is extensively used, celestial navigation is also taught as a standby in case of failure of GPS or signal interruption. It is an example of the maritime sector's focus on redundancy and seamanship. Familiarity with the operation of a sextant, stars, and astronomical information is still an integral part of training.

Do BSc Nautical Science graduates have careers in shore-based maritime employment without sea service?

Yes, although the conventional route is through sea service, some graduates shift into shore-based career opportunities in port operation, shipping logistics, maritime law, chartering, and marine insurance. Nevertheless, most of these careers still favor or demand some sea-time experience in order to grasp ship operations thoroughly.

Are there license conversions or international opportunities for BSc Nautical Science graduates?

Yes, graduates who receive their Certificate of Competency (CoC) in a country such as India have opportunities for license conversions in a country such as the UK, Australia, or New Zealand. But it entails fulfilling certain regulatory requirements, which are usually other training modules, examination, and some amount of sea-time acceptable to the foreign maritime authority.
