BTech Data Science Cut Off in IITs 2025

• Updated on  Aug 11, 2025, by Akangsha Das

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2025 has begun announcing opening and closing ranks for BTech Data Science courses in some IITs. For instance, in Round 1 of 2025, the course of IIT Roorkee closed at approximately 687 under the General category and that of IIT Guwahati at approximately 974. Even relatively new IITs such as Bhilai and Mandi have Data Science streams, whose closing ranks vary from approximately 1,300 to almost 4,000, which tells us about demand and supply fluctuations between these seats. These figures indicate the competition at the time of admission to these specialized courses.

Several factors continue to influence Data Science cut-offs in IITs in 2025. The number of candidates sitting for JEE Advanced influences directly, with more candidates resulting in competition and therefore tending to push cut-offs. The difficulty of the test also has an effect—difficult tests provide low cut-offs, whereas simple tests offer higher cut-offs. Also, the number of seats in Data Science courses and reservations by category create variations in cut-offs in IITs and categories. Awareness about these will help in counselling planning effectively.

How to Check JEE Advanced 2025 BTech Data Science Cutoff Marks?

To obtain admission in BTech Data Science by JEE Advanced 2025, you should know where and how to view the authentic cutoff marks. Cutoffs are the minimum rank or score that must be obtained to become eligible and vary with IIT, category, and year. A simple step-by-step guide that will help you easily access the current cutoff information is presented below.

  • Visit the official JoSAA website when seat allotment begins.
  • Visit the "Opening and Closing Ranks" webpage under the BTech courses category.
  • Select the year 2025 and the Data Science course and its respective IIT.
  • Filter by choosing your category (General, OBC, SC, ST, PwD, etc.).
  • Note down the opening and closing ranks for every seat allotment round.
  • Keep track of official announcements and news on JoSAA or IIT websites for declarations of any updates.

Factors Affecting BTech Data Science JEE Advanced Cut Off

Some of the factors that affect the BTech Data Science JEE Advanced cut off are mentioned below:

  • The cutoff is influenced by the number of students competing for Data Science seats; the greater the number of students, the higher the cutoff ranks tend to be.
  • The difficulty level of the JEE Advanced examination has an influence on cut offs; a more difficult examination results in lower cut-offs, whereas an easier examination results in higher ones.
  • The number of seats present at each IIT for BTech Data Science, hence, directly affects the cut off; there will be fewer cut off ranks and competition when there are fewer seats.
  • Reservation rules for groups like OBC, SC, ST, EWS, and PwD bring cutoff rank variations for the respective categories.
  • Cut-offs are determined by the demand for the Data Science course in a year because greater demand brings in better admission ranks.
  • Test or syllabus pattern modifications can impact student performance and, in turn, impact cutoff trends.

BTech Data Science JEE Advanced Tie Breaking Criteria

In case of a tie, when two or more students obtain equal marks in JEE Advanced for admission to BTech Data Science, a logical procedure is applied to determine rankings in an orderly manner to ensure justice. The procedures to resolve the ties are stated as follows:

  • Higher marks in Mathematics - The candidate with the higher Mathematics score gets a higher ranking.
  • Higher Physics marks - A Candidate who gets a higher Physics mark is of a higher rank if still the same.
  • Higher marks in Chemistry - If still the same, the candidate who gets a higher Chemistry mark is of higher rank.
  • Age - Older one
  • In case all subject marks are the same, the older candidate is preferred.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible for the closing rank of BTech Data Science in IITs to go lower even after Round 1 of JoSAA counselling?

Yes, closing ranks can change with counselling rounds. As students drop out or get upgraded to a higher order, seats become available, and opportunities are available for lower-ranked students to get into a seat in later rounds, like Round 4 or 5.

Why are newer IITs having higher closing ranks for Data Science compared to older IITs for other streams?

Newer IITs can have fashionable courses such as Data Science that draw high-merit candidates even if the IIT is relatively new. Older IITs with old-fashioned streams such as Mechanical or Civil, on the other hand, may not have the same surge of preference and thus create this difference in closing ranks.

Is the cut-off applicable to Data Science depending upon the name of the specific specialisation, e.g., "Data Science and AI" versus "Data Engineering"?

Yes. Although the courses are connected, the title and structure of the programme vary between IITs and thus may influence demand and consequently cut-offs. For example, "Data Science and AI" will generate more interest compared to a more general or otherwise named programme, despite the generic curriculum being the same.

Are there different cut-offs for female candidates in Data Science in IITs?

Some IITs have a supernumerary reservation quota for female candidates, and hence, varying cut-offs. These ranks are slightly more in number (i.e., less demanding), providing greater opportunities to female candidates for some courses, such as Data Science.

Is a higher closing rank always a pointer towards a bad-quality program or IIT?

Not necessarily. Closing ranks are a function of perception, location, and trends, not program quality. A newer IIT can have great faculty and curriculum but still have a higher (less competitive) closing rank because of poor visibility or students from the same geography.
