As a Tamil Nadu state government university, Alagappa University has a long history of good status. First, Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar, a Padma Bhushan laureate, started it in the late 1950s. It was a Teacher Training College back then. Finally, in 1985, the state's Special Act of the Government made it a university. It has been an Affiliating University since 2002. With a student body of 1.12 lakh, Alagappa University provides both traditional and online courses.
For online degree programs, it has a special facility named Alagappa University CDOE (Centre for Distance and Online Education). The university's two former centers' operations and programs are combined into the CDOE. They are the Directorate of Online Programs (DOP), which was launched in 2018, and the Directorate of Distant Education (DDE), which was founded in 1992. According to the UGC-DEB Regulations 2020, this distinct center of the Higher Education Institution (HEI) is now qualified.
It provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online Learning (OL) formats. Arts, Science, Management, and Education are the four departments that currently make up Alagappa University's CDOE. Six postgraduate programs are offered by the Faculty of Arts, two by the Faculty of Science, and two by the Faculty of Management. About 29 ODL programs are available, some of which also offer certifications and diplomas. Alagappa University is known for earning an A+ grade from the NAAC. Additionally, it has Category-1 autonomy, which enables it to develop programs and curriculum without requesting or waiting for permission from the UGC-DEB. In 2023, it scored 53.3 and was ranked 30th in the Indian university category by the NIRF.

Alagappa University – Online Admission 2025:
The university admits students to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. Both online and offline applications are accepted for admission to Alagappa University. Merit in the qualifying exam determines admission to undergraduate programs. Admission to the B.Ed., D.Ed., and B.P.Ed. programs, however, are determined by the results of the university's entrance exam. Admission to postgraduate programs is determined by the candidate's performance on the qualifying exam, entrance exam, university interview, or a combination of the two. Admission to PhD programs is determined by the university's admission exam and interview process.
