GATE 2026 Cutoff is the qualifying mark required by candidates for PG admission in IITs, NITs, & GFITs and PSU Recruitments through GATE 2026. IIT Guwahati will release the cutoff after the GATE 2026 Result announcement in March 2026. The cutoff of GATE 2026 will vary for each subject and category based on exam difficulty level, number of candidates, and seat availability. The GATE expected cutoff 2026 for General category will be 27-29, whereas for OBC & SC/ST category, it will be 24-25 & 18-20, respectively.
There are two types of cutoffs in GATE 2026, namely, qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score needed to pass the exam, while the admission cutoff is decided by institutes during the counselling and admission process. Additionally, PSUs also release their individual cutoffs for recruitment purposes. Read further to know more about the GATE 2026 Cutoff.
Factors Affecting GATE 2026 Cutoff
Several important factors will influence the GATE 2026 cutoff. These include the number of candidates appearing for the exam, the total number of available seats, and the difficulty level of the question paper. Some branches like Computer Science or Electronics attract more candidates, which usually raises the cutoff for those papers. The category of the candidate also plays a key role, as reserved categories generally have lower cutoffs than the general category. Additionally, each institute releases its own admission cutoff depending on seat intake and applicant performance. Check the factors given below which influences the making of GATE 2026 Cutoff.
- Number of Candidates Appearing: Higher participation increases competition, raising the cutoff.
- Seat Availability: Fewer seats can lead to a higher admission cutoff in top institutes.
- Difficulty Level of Exam: Tougher papers may lead to lower cutoffs and vice versa.
- Category of Candidate: Cutoff scores vary for General, OBC, SC, ST, and PwD categories.
- Branch-wise Popularity: Highly demanded branches often have higher cutoffs.

Difference Between GATE 2026 Qualifying Cutoff and Admission Cutoff
Candidates appearing in the GATE exam must understand the difference between the qualifying cutoff and the admission cutoff. GATE qualifying cutoff is the eligibility cutoff for the admission process, and GATE admission cutoff is the minimum mark to get admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFITs. Candidates can check the difference in the table below.
GATE Qualifying Cutoff | GATE Admission Cutoff |
Eligibility cutoff for participating in the admission process. It is the minimum mark to secure the admission process. | Participating institutes release this admission cutoff as opening and closing rank. |
Candidates are not selected based on the qualifying cutoff | Candidates are selected based on the admission cutoff |
The qualifying cutoff is fixed before the announcement of GATE Result | Admission cutoff is released after each round of counselling session |
It is announced by the conducting authority of GATE exam | It is released by the participating institutes |
The qualifying cutoff includes the qualifying marks for each paper | Admission cutoff includes opening and closing rank for participating institutes |
GATE 2026 Cutoff (Expected)
IIT Guwahati will release the GATE 2026 Cutoff on the official website. The cutoff for GATE 2026 is the minimum qualifying marks that candidates need to score for getting admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other prestigious institutions across India. The GATE Cutoff Marks 2026 is expected to range from 25 to 50 marks for different papers. The cutoff will depend on various factors such as exam difficulty level, number of candidates appeared, previous year cutoff trends, etc. Check out the following table for GATE 2026 expected cutoff.

GATE 2026 Cutoff FAQs
What is the expected GATE 2026 cutoff for Computer Science?
The expected GATE 2026 cutoff for Computer Science for General category candidates is likely to be between 27 to 29 marks. For OBC candidates, it may range around 24 to 25, while for SC/ST candidates, it could be between 18 to 20 marks.
Who will release the GATE 2026 cutoff?
The GATE 2026 cutoff will be officially released by IIT Guwahati. It will be available on the official website after the declaration of results. The cutoff will be category-wise and subject-wise.
When will the GATE 2026 cutoff be released?
The GATE 2026 cutoff will be released along with the result, which is expected to be out in March 2026. Candidates can check the cutoff on the official website gate2026.iitg.ac.in. However, the exact date will be confirmed through an official notice.
What are the types of GATE 2026 cutoff?
There are two types of GATE 2026 cutoff – qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score required to pass the GATE exam. The admission cutoff is the score required to get admission in IITs, NITs, or other institutes.
Does GATE 2026 cutoff vary by category?
Yes, the GATE 2026 cutoff will be different for each category. Generally, the General category has the highest cutoff, while SC, ST, and PwD categories have lower cutoffs. The cutoffs are relaxed for reserved category candidates as per government norms.
How is the GATE 2026 cutoff calculated?
The GATE 2026 cutoff is calculated based on various factors such as total candidates, difficulty level, seat availability, and past year trends. The exam authority also uses a normalization process for multi-session papers.
What is the difference between qualifying and admission cutoff in GATE 2026?
The qualifying cutoff of GATE 2026 only means that a candidate has passed the exam. The admission cutoff is used by institutes for shortlisting candidates for M.Tech courses. Scoring the qualifying cutoff does not guarantee admission.
Is the GATE 2026 cutoff required for PSU recruitment?
Yes, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) use the GATE 2026 cutoff to shortlist candidates for interviews. Each PSU sets its own cutoff based on its recruitment policy. Final selection is based on the PSU's merit list and interview performance.
Where can I check the GATE 2026 cutoff for IIT and NIT admission?
The GATE 2026 cutoff for IIT admissions will be released during COAP counselling. For NITs and GFTIs, the cutoffs will be published through CCMT counselling. Candidates should check the official COAP and CCMT portals for institute-wise admission cutoffs.
