The Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH) is a five and a half year professional undergraduate degree that includes a mandatory one-year internship. It consists of a comprehensive course that is mainly based on the guidelines set by the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) that creates a standardized syllabus at both government and private colleges.
The coursework will equip candidates with introductory/basic and higher levels of knowledge in veterinary anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, animal nutrition, livestock production and management, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, public health, genetics and breeding, surgery and medicine, and epidemiology.
Students are taught the scientific principles of animal health/disease control, methods of diagnosis and treatment, surgery, population health and animal economics. The program also focuses on experiential training by requiring clinical postings, laboratory work, as well as numerous clinical experiences on the internship.
Although both public and private colleges follow the same list of subjects determined by the VCI, there may also be differences in teaching materials and livestock exposure with government institutes sometimes having better facilities and large farms. The only difference is the amount of degree content, professional skill training, and recognition that both types of colleges have in common, which makes graduates equally qualified to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine and work across the country.
