Why is the IIT JEE Main Result Announced in Percentile?
The National Testing Agency conducts the JEE Main exam in two sessions i.e., in January and April. The exam is held over several days in two shifts on each day. The difficulty level of the JEE Main question paper on each day can be more or less difficult than the other day. In order to overcome this parity in difficulty levels of the exam among candidates, “Marks normalisation procedure based on Percentile Score” is followed. Point to be noted, the normalised marks are not the actual marks obtained by the candidate. Instead it is a comparative score obtained using a fixed normalisation formula which is developed by NTA.
What is a Good Score in JEE Main 2026?
Numerous test takers have questions related to a good JEE Main score, such as “Is 160 a good score in JEE Main?”, “Is 120 a good score in JEE Main?”, or “Is 150 a good score in JEE Mains?”. According to previous year trends, a score of 250 marks or above is considered as a good score in the JEE Mains exam. Thus, higher the marks, the better the rank of candidates. Moreover, to know what is a good score in JEE Main, candidates are advised to compare the scores among the colleges they wish to get admission into.
JEE Main 2026 Normalisation Formula
As per the official brochure released by NTA, it says “The process of Normalisation is an established practice for comparing candidate scores across Multi-session papers and is similar to those being adopted in other large educational selection tests conducted in India. For normalisation across sections, NTA shall use the percentile equivalence.” Here, it means that the NTA follows a unique JEE Main normalisation process to calculate normalised scores of candidates. Candidates can use the JEE Main Normalisation Formula 2026 to calculate the JEE Main 2026 percentile score in Chemistry, Maths, and Physics. The final results for each session of JEE Main would be prepared in the form of raw scores, percentile scores separately for each three subjects, and the total. The normalisation formula is a given below-
Total Percentile (T1P):
(100 x No. of candidates from the session with the war score equal to or less than T1 score) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session
Mathematics Percentile (M1P):
(100 x No. of candidates from the session with the war score equal to or less than M1 score in Mathematics) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session
Physics Percentile (P1P):
(100 x No. of candidates from the session with the war score equal to or less than P1 score in Physics) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session
Chemistry Percentile (C1P):
(100 x No. of candidates from the session with the war score equal to or less than C1 score in Chemistry) / Total No. of candidates appeared in the session
JEE Main 2026 Tie-Breaker Guidelines
The tie-breaker guidelines for JEE Main 2026 are prescribed by the National Testing Agency. The authority follows the given order below to break tie among students who have scored the same percentile score. The order is followed as-
- NTA score in Mathematics
- Score in Physics
- Score in Chemistry
- The candidate with lower ratio of incorrect to correct attempts in all subjects will receive a better rank.
- If the tie still continues, the candidate with a lower incorrect to correct ratio in Mathematics will get a higher rank.
- If the tie still persists, the same rule of incorrect to correct ratio attempts will be applied to physics followed by chemistry.
- Even after this, if the tie remains, both candidates will get the same JEE Main rank.
JEE Main Marks vs Percentile vs Ranks 2026 FAQs
