GATE Cutoff 2026: Factors, Branch-Wise Exam Cutoff, Previous Year Trends

• Updated on 9 Sept, 2025 by Souvik

GATE Cutoff 2026 is the qualifying mark required by candidates for PG admission in IITs, NITs, & GFITs and PSU Recruitments through GATE 2026. IIT Guwahati will release the cutoff after the GATE Result 2026 announcement in March 2026. The cutoff of GATE 2026 will vary for each subject and category based on exam difficulty level, number of candidates, and seat availability. The GATE expected cutoff 2026 for General category will be 27-29, whereas for OBC & SC/ST category, it will be 24-25 & 18-20, respectively.

There are two types of cutoffs in GATE 2026, namely, qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score needed to pass the exam, while the admission cutoff is decided by institutes during the counselling and admission process. Additionally, PSUs also release their individual cutoffs for recruitment purposes. Read further to know more about the GATE 2026 Cutoff.

Factors Affecting GATE Cutoff 2026

Several important factors will influence the GATE cutoff 2026. These include the number of candidates appearing for the exam, the total number of available seats, and the difficulty level of the question paper. Some branches like Computer Science or Electronics attract more candidates, which usually raises the cutoff for those papers. The category of the candidate also plays a key role, as reserved categories generally have lower cutoffs than the general category. Additionally, each institute releases its own admission cutoff depending on seat intake and applicant performance. Check the factors given below that influence the making of the GATE 2026 Cutoff.

  • Number of Candidates Appearing: Higher participation increases competition, raising the cutoff.
  • Seat Availability: Fewer seats can lead to a higher admission cutoff in top institutes.
  • Difficulty Level of Exam: Tougher papers may lead to lower cutoffs and vice versa.
  • Category of Candidate: Cutoff scores vary for General, OBC, SC, ST, and PwD categories.
  • Branch-wise Popularity: Highly demanded branches often have higher cutoffs.

There are two types of GATE 2026 cutoff – qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum score required to pass the GATE exam. The admission cutoff is the score required to get admission in IITs, NITs, or other institutes.

Does GATE 2026 cutoff vary by category?

Yes, the GATE 2026 cutoff will be different for each category. Generally, the General category has the highest cutoff, while SC, ST, and PwD categories have lower cutoffs. The cutoffs are relaxed for reserved category candidates as per government norms.

How is the GATE 2026 cutoff calculated?

The GATE 2026 cutoff is calculated based on various factors such as total candidates, difficulty level, seat availability, and past year trends. The exam authority also uses a normalization process for multi-session papers.

What is the difference between qualifying and admission cutoff in GATE 2026?

The qualifying cutoff of GATE 2026 only means that a candidate has passed the exam. The admission cutoff is used by institutes for shortlisting candidates for M.Tech courses. Scoring the qualifying cutoff does not guarantee admission.

Is the GATE 2026 cutoff required for PSU recruitment?

Yes, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) use the GATE 2026 cutoff to shortlist candidates for interviews. Each PSU sets its own cutoff based on its recruitment policy. Final selection is based on the PSU's merit list and interview performance.

Where can I check the GATE 2026 cutoff for IIT and NIT admission?

The GATE 2026 cutoff for IIT admissions will be released during COAP counselling. For NITs and GFTIs, the cutoffs will be published through CCMT counselling. Candidates should check the official COAP and CCMT portals for institute-wise admission cutoffs.
